Outdoor furniture at the Salone del Mobile. Milano 2016: the top 8 made in Spain

With terraces and gardens tending to be seamless extensions of contemporary open-plan living spaces, outdoor furniture is all about replicating the comfort and style people enjoy indoors. At the last Salone, Spanish brands, such as GANDIA BLASCO, KETTAL, POINT, STRATTA and CALMA, showcased new outdoor designs and products that take the patios to the next level. Wish to know how? Read on…

DNA outdoor furniture collection by José Gandia-Blasco for GANDIA BLASCO

Mixing materials is indeed one of the biggest outdoor furniture trends. Mixed material outdoor furniture is cool, creates a modern feel and is often easier to keep clean. Wood and resin have become quite common in recent years, but you can expect to see also more metal, glass and composite materials. Teak is a big heat of the moment, especially in outdoor living and dining furniture.

LINEAL collection by Gabriel Teixidó for POINT

Wicker and rattan have taken on a stylish new flair and match perfectly the trend of bringing natural and organic elements into living spaces both indoor and outdoor. You can find them in chairs, tables, stools and outdoor sofas in the classic light brown or painted in other colours, such as the vibrant red or black. Synthetic fibres that perfectly imitate the natural materials are another good option for a en pleine nature look.

The CLEO collection by Belén Burguete for POINT draws inspiration from the traditional basketwork

Furniture has also been improved with the introduction of new weather and fade-resistant materials (Shintotex, Teflon, Sunbrella, Batyline, Sergio Ferrari, epoxy paints…) that make it possible to create a relaxing area in the sun or an open-air oasis for wining, entertaining and socializing.

DORM

As for colours, neutrals are still largely used — particularly shades of gray — but the trend now is to throw in a punch of more lively colours to liven things up, such as the different shades of blue, green or pink.

DNA by José Gandia-Blasco for GANDIA BLASCO

DNA is an elegant and compelling collection of outdoor furniture that integrates with its environment, from private gardens to large scale contract applications. Its laminated aluminium structure evokes the subtle interplay of light and shadows of the traditional Mediterranean shutters. It is available with the standard anodized finish or in a range of colours that includes white, sand, bronze, and the anthracite. The seating and the backrest are made of polyurethane foam upholstered with water-proof fabrics.

The collection includes sun loungers, side tables, coffee tables, dining tables, chairs, armchairs, two-seater and three-seater sofas and a chaise longue for modular seating compositions.

KETTAL CALA by Doshi Levien for KETTAL

Inspired by the iconic Emanuelle, CALA is a high backed armchair with a powder-coated aluminum frame knitted with rope. The open wave provides the chair with visual privacy while allowing a firm connection with the surroundings. The refined high backrest and the transparencies give the chair a majestic presence in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The wide choice of metal coatings, rope colours and cushion fabrics offers the possibility to tailor the chair to different decorative styles and interior designs. Legs come in two options: teak legs or aluminium pedestal.

ARMADILLO by Joaquin Homs for POINT

Reproducing the animal shape from which it takes its name, ARMADILLO is a swinging garden sofa that is also available with an anodized frame for those who don’t have a sturdy enough tree to support the sofa.

The folding hood, available in dark brown or ivory white, provide shade and privacy white the large comfy cushions ensure the best conform. The high-resistant fabrics combines perfectly with the colours – toasted or ivory white – of the synthetic Shintotex fibres.

SENYORA seating system by Andreu Carulla for CALMA

Bring a Mediterranean breeze to your patio with the new SENYORA PEPA, SENYORA LOLA and SENYORA MARIA chair! SENYORA is an innovative seating system that gives a new intriguing twist to the traditional beach recliners.

It consists of a fabric with flat inserts in its interior that shapes the seat and the back of the chairs. The set is easily adjustable to different frames without any fastening mechanism.

GEOMETRIC double daybed by Belén Burguete (EstudiB3) for SKYLINE DESIGN

Traditional latticework keeps on inspiring new designs, as in this latest daybed of the Spanish firm SKYLINE DESIGN. Diagonals and straight lines shape the frame and the mesh playing with light and creating unique shadow effects.  Its design is made to fully enjoy the outdoor spaces on the beach, in pool areas or in a garden.

POINTER collection by Herrera Studio for STRATTA

Made of foam coated with a PU skin, POINTER is a collection of soft furniture specifically designed for original compositions in public or private spaces, indoor or outdoor: casual chat spaces, collaborative areas at work, intimate corners and even stackable walls.

KETTAL RIVA collection by Jasper Morrison for KETTAL

Made of teak, the KETTAL RIVA is a complete collection of outdoor furniture which encompasses dining armchairs, dining tables, club armchairs, two-seater sofas, deck chairs and side tables.

Inspired by traditional outdoor chairs, the plank construction of seats and backrest has been designed to maximized comfort and enhance the beauty of pieces. Comfort is also improved by the choice of cushions available in a choice of trendy colours.

CLUB collection by Joan Gaspar for VILAGRASA (Resol)

Made of rotomoulded polyethylene, CLUB is a collection of chairs, sofas, armchairs and tables / footrests for indoor and outdoor use. Featuring a strong appearance with a certain dose of classicism, CLUB intentionally escapes from apparent modernity seeking instead a perfect integration to different environments.

It has a water drainage system and UV protection factor. As an optional, table tops can be chosen in HPL or in tempered glass. Cotton and polyester cushions for outdoor use are also available.
