IMM Cologne 2014: NANIMARQUINA, rugs as art

December 27 / 2013

At the upcoming edition of IMM Cologne, NANIMARQUINA, Spain’s internationally renowned brand for designer rugs and carpets, will unveil its latest launch: the GOST rug. This black and white rug is designed by Spanish designer Martí Guixé, who has recreated a classic Kerman rug using motifs of animals, flowers and birds that hide and then reveal themselves within the pattern, like ghosts. So this January, at Imm let’s be a little bit ghostbusters and find the new proposals from NANIMARQUINA>>>

The new GHOST rug a design by Martí Guixé for Nanimarquina

GHOST by Martí Guixé NEW!

The story of Kerman rugs dated back to the 15th-century Persia, and precisely to that part of central Iran, lying between mountains and the Lut desert, where artisans mastered the art of weaving rugs of extraordinary sizes and designs.

After a successful revival in the 19th century, with Kerman rugs coming back to its ancient splendor, in recent time they have been considered old-fashioned. But Martí Guixé, the Spanish designer famous for his unconventional and conceptual approach to food and commercial design, has given them a second chance.

His hand-knotted GHOST carpet made of 100% New Zealand wool features the mythical pictorial motifs of birds, flowers, horses and deer that appear and disappear magically within the black and white pattern of the carpet.

Mr. Guixé said that he worked slowly over three months, translating his mood changes into graphic irregularities that give the pattern a touch of mysticism and mystery.

GHOST in black and white, a mysterious and brilliant blend of past and present that remains faithful to the strange simplicity and seriousness of the artist’s work. The noise and saturation of the design put a modern spin on the traditional rug, drawing us into the exuberance of the scene, so timeless and yet so fresh. Indeed, a fresh take on ancient rug craftsmanship.

Always innovating with different techniques and materials, NANIMARQUINA is a pioneering brand on the contemporary rugs scene. Its carpets are characterized by an ebullience that results from the use of bright colours and impactful designs, whether they are abstract or feature natural motifs.
