CALMA is one of the best known names in contemporary furniture. It was set up in Catalonia in 2004 and since its inception has kept in tune with changing styles and needs but without having constantly to re-invent itself.

“CALMA was born as an independent brand of our former business, INICIATIVA EXTERIOR, which is the Spain and Portugal’s main distributor of outdoor big names,” explains Tomás Bunes, of the managing area. “Being in the market since 1994 means that we know all about outdoor comfort and the needs of our clients. Nevertheless, we strived to create brand new products that tap into our own values rather than in current trends”.

Located in Empordà (Catalonia), the region where creative geniuses such as Dalí and Muntaner were born, the brand gets inspiration from its own DNA and roots, benefiting therefore from being part of the multifaceted Mediterranean world. “We are young, creative, eclectic and above all free,” points out Bunes. “Over the time, this has led us to explore new possibilities and differentiate us in the market”.

Nouns that better can describe their peculiar approach to outdoor design are good quality, avant-garde, simplicity, comfort and functionality.

CALMA furniture is distinctive – but not because it is way-out or gimmicky, rather because it has an effortless, restrained elegance. “And because we constantly search new solutions to improve our products. It can be the use of cutting-edge materials and technology, most of them made in Spain such as the TPB® (top-resistance porcelain-ceramic surfaces), or just the improvement of manufacturing processes, finishes and ergonomic designs… This is the core idea that motivates us every time we start a new project” says Bunes.
